While drinking a coffee in our local café this morning, it struck me how inapproate the lyrics of the old pop song being played are in today's social climate.

The number from the early Sixties by Susan Maughan (now 85!) was Bobby's Girl - here's the last two lines of the chorus.

If I was Bobby's girl
What a faithful, thankful girl I'd be

Let's have some more currently inappropriate lyrics from that era......

I think Ringo actually meant "You're sixteen, you're legal and you're mine"

Agree with NMA - every decade has its share of "iffy" songs, Sam Smith's "Unholy" being one for  2023:  Springsteen's  "I'm on Fire" in the 80s, etc., etc.

Neil Sedaka's Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen is a similar theme to Ringo's

Tonight's the night I've waited for
Because you're not a baby anymore
You've turned into the prettiest girl I've ever seen,
Happy birthday sweet sixteen

What happened to that funny face
My little tomboy now wears satins and lace
I can't believe my eyes you're just a teenage dream
Happy birthday sweet sixteen

I'm not sure it counts as "inappropriate",  but the meaning of Norwegian Wood flew way over my head when I was young. Man has a one-night stand, and because the woman is free-spirited and leaves without shame, he sets her house on fire.

I've got your picture of me and you
You wrote "I love you", I wrote "Me too"
I sit there staring and there's nothing else to do
Oh, it's in color, your hair is brown
Your eyes are hazel and soft as clouds
I often kiss you when there's no one else around

I've got your picture, I've got your picture
I'd like a million of ya over myself
I want a doctor to take your picture
So I can look at you from inside as well

You've got me turning up and turning down
And turning in and turning 'round

I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

I've got your picture, I've got your picture
I'd like a million of them over myself
I want a doctor to take your picture
So I can look at you from inside as well

You've got me turning up and turning down
And turning in and turning 'round

I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

No sex, no drugs, no wine, no women
No fun, no sin, no you, no wonder it's dark
Everyone around me is a total stranger
Everyone avoids me like a psyched Lone Ranger
Everyone

That's why I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so (think so, think so, think so)
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

The Vapors, Turning Japanese

Hey, little girl
Comb your hair, fix your make-up
Soon he will open the door
Don't think because
There's a ring on your finger
You needn't try any more

For wives should always be lovers, too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
I'm warning you

Day after day
There are girls at the office
And men will always be men
Don't send him off
With your hair still in curlers
You may not see him again

For wives should always be lovers, too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
He's almost here

Hey, little girl
Better wear something pretty
Something you'd wear to go to the city
And dim all the lights
Pour the wine, start the music
Time to get ready for love

Oh, time to get ready
Time to get ready
Time to get ready
For love

Mariah Carey  .. 2008

Touch my body Let me wrap my thighs All around your waist Just a little taste Touch my body Know you like my curves Come on and give me what I deserve And touch my body Boy you can put me on you Like a brand new white tee I'll hug your body tighter Than my favorite jeans I want you to caress me Like a tropical breeze And float away with you In the Caribbean Sea

Seventeen...... and not yet a woman....

(etc)

The Regents, 1980

Hit Me, Baby, One More Time

That Mariah Carey song is too tame for today's youth.
