Sandy, I believe it was  Louis XIV, more or less saying that 'after us our culture would be lost/drowned, in fact'. In other words, when older heads (which held a lot of wisdom and knowledge of earlier times) went, the knowledge would also be lost  in the flood of ignorance.  Best way I can  express it.  For a French quote it is pretty pithy and I've come across  it since I was about 16 (far too long ago!).

I think Louis le Grand was thinking nothing so grand

Only that ( as all old men today - just look at Biden, Trump and Putin ( and Cameron) - after us chaos because we are the only capable ones to  be able to run a country and no one else can do it like us - indispensable (*) we are

( yeah right)

He also said at the end ( wheeled around by Madame his third wife ( Maintenon) - zad eez 1710

"Eef I 'ad made loff as much as I made war, La  Belle France wd be in a much better place"

war didnt pay even in the 1700s

(*) no oh god it was Giuliani ( he of the $150m award against him) who was mayor of New York on 9/11. He seriously suggested that the situation was so  chaotic that... he might have to stay on as an apptd mayor, to sort it out !

they owe amongst us
