It's similar to asking about gender and ethnicity- so they can try to meet/move towards unofficial targets on inclusivity.It's not a great measure though- I got free school meals in the 1970s but at the time it was because I had so many siblings- we were actually a reasonably well off family (parents had been to grammar school) and it was a high achieving...

I have noticed that more and more applications are interested in what your parents did and to what status they achieved.

 

Surely your answer should be, "Mind your own business" ?

To assess your social 'class' ... even though you may have shifted considerably since childhood?  Highly intrusive I'd say.
