Very Sad News

Rest Peacefully Steve  x

That is a shock. Another loss that has been part of our day to day lives for decades. He still sounded youthful although he was 69. I think he had struggled with weight issues for a long time but seemed to have got on top of that. His long running afternoon show was company, comfort and amusement, for millions daily for decades. Incredibly Steve Wright in the Afternoon started in 1981. The characters and silly sketches were unmissable. Sid The Manager and Barry from Watford have also left us for ever. R.I.P Wrighty.

I like some I'm sure must think djs like SW were immortal!..So his untimely death is a massive shock!?

Rip SW

This really is awful news. I've listened to SW for many, many years. He appeared to be a very down-to-earth sort of guy, witty, funny. He certainly brightened my days up, especially on a Sunday morning.

RIP Steve Wright. You really will be missed.

Serious shockin' ...

It's what he would have wanted, Ellipsis. 😊

Barry at 17.41 - continuing a prerecorded weekend show when he had been live on air for five afternoons a week hardly seems like a good use of the amazing talent the BBC are suddenly so keen to tell us Mr Wright was.

He was sacked in the BBC's bizarre obsession with a 'younger audience' which is failing on a daily basis.

The BBC is as hypocritical as it is deluded.

This morning,  The Mail has weighed in at length about the rank hypocrisy of the BBC's fulsome 'tribute' to Steve Wright.

They occupy my original point - if he is such a wonderful guy, and consumate broadcaster, why did you sack him?

For 'occupy' please read 'echo'.

i agree with andy, /He was sacked in the BBC's bizarre obsession with a 'younger audience/ i used to many years ago listen to radio 1 in work, i heard it slowly go down hill, dropping dj's for younger ones, 70's 80's had some great dj's who could tap in to there listeners, you felt they knew you like an old friend, now it's just junk food radio..who is that dj...no idea.

fender - the answer is that they are not djs - they are z list celebs who are given a script and have to ask inane questions about what people are having for dinner (remind you of anywhere else) or what you wore to a fancy dress party.  For example Rob Beckett - I have to turn over when he comes on, his inane wittering drives me to distraction.  The only Radio 2 DJ I listen to now is Tony Blackburn - at least he plays decent music even if his humour is sometimes buttock clenching.
