I know he played nick-knack on my shoe for two & my knee for three, door for four, etc. but I can't remember what was number one: - driving me crazy ,  anyone?

It can be used for a mnemonic system.

My drum.

Correct AH

When we were children we used to say 'bum'.  We thought that was really naughty.  😂

Either thumb or drum, apparently:

(I'm reasonably confident that it was 'thumb' at our school)

Thumb or bum. It depends who's listening.

Yes, thanks but what was foxing me

Question Author

oops,!  was that it doesnt really rhyme

Question Author

I think "one" is like orange, nothing rhymes with it.

Question Author

It has to be an object for the mnemonics (attaching some list you want to remember) to visualise.

I suppose 'John' rhymes with 'one' best, and it can be an object, as in 'I need to go to the john'. 🙂

thumb.

It was 'thumb' or 'drum' when I was young.

>>> "I think "one" is like orange, nothing rhymes with it"

America's National Rifle Association might suggest "He plays knick-knack on my gun", I think. 😊

Our own Federation of Bakers though might perhaps prefer "He plays knick-knack on my bun".

However any old man who "plays knick-knack on my son" should definitely be reported to the authorities!

Hi Khandro - Forgive the off-thread message please - I have posted on the thread about the lady talking about her friend's upsetting behaviour - hopefully you can take a look.

Thanks.

Drum - and the link given mentions 'pattywack' whereas we always knew it as paddywack (which incidentally all my dogs are currently chomping away on).

sporange.

Purple, and pint, are the same - no rhyme.
