davebro - I think your near-namesake is right for the species as a general rule but not necessarily for individuals. This applies to all species, hence "Survival of the fittest". Look at all the animal world - the males fight for dominance and the dominant males are the ones that get to breed so the species gets stronger. If there is a god, that's how it designed the world and a kind god doesn't fit.
