I saw an article somewhere on the web about mobile phones having a detrimental affect on wireless networks? Anybody have any information on this? links etc...

As far as I'm aware, mobile phones can easily interfere with your wireless network particularly if the phone is located within a few feet of your router or the wireless adaptor in your pc. It's all to do with the radio frequency at which the wireless equipment/mobile phone operates. You can get some info from wireless equipment suppliers' websites, e.g. www.netgear.com. Hope that helps.
