Broken Wing Mirror

So, I've just returned to my parked car (parked on a high street) after 1/2 an hour to find my wing mirror smashed. I can see a CCTV camera nearby. Is it worth me pursuing asking for footage do you think? The car is pretty old, it is more the principle to be honest.

Not worth claiming through your insurance even though it's clearly not your fault.

I would follow my princibles if it was me. Why should you accept someone damaging your car regardless of age and just driving off. Theres far to much of this sort of thing going on, and the more you ignore it the worse it gets. Its your property thats be damaged, and the driver who has done it must have known, because he or she must also have damage. A note left on your car would have been the right thing to do.

Knocking a wing mirror wouldn't necessarily damage the offending vehicle.  If it's the wing mirror of car travelling in the same direction as the parked car is facing, it is likely it will just fold in without damage.

The parked car's wing mirror gets damaged because it isn't designed to fold backwards.

It is a criminal offence to drive off after causing damage so you could report it to the police.

Did you take a photo of the damage before you moved it?

There's no harm in trying the CCTV camera inquiry. You never know what it could have seen.

Thank you everyone for responding so quickly. I think the camera is a council camera (it's on a big pole).I will send a message to BCP to see if they can see anything. But even if they have anything would the police be interested? I'm not going to claim as my excess is far higher than a replacement wing mirror. I have to say though driving home after finding my car like that. It is surprising how many times looked where my mirror used to be.

Data protection prevents us from requesting anything but images of ourselves from the CCTV recording.

The Police or your Insurance Company would have to make the request but I fear neither would actually investigate.

Nope, it's a criminal offence not to stop.  That's what they're their for.  The reality is they'll log it and give a crime number.  But still it's reported.

but under what law do you demand the CCTV ?  - you arent getting in the car or out of it, so it is not your data. So if it is not your data, then I dont see underwhat law you can demand it...
