I'm not sure if this should be in sceince or shopping but here goes.

I have a jewelry set ( necklace, ring and earings) with a total of 4 garnets in them each of which look the same size.

Although to me the jewelry doesn't look like it cost a million £ or anything it does have a certificate of authenticity for the garnets.

I think the certificate is rather vauge so don't know if even that is authentic lol. I have had a look on the internet and as usual have gotten bamboosaled with too much technical information. If I copy what is on the cert can someone please let me know if I should worry about insurance or just give it to the kids to play with :)

Thanks

Facet: Oval about 4x6mm
Hardness: about 6.5 - 7.5
Density: about 3.51 - 4.24
Index of refraction: 1.72 - 1.94

There are 4 garnets altogether that look to be the same size.

Thanks

Sorry forgot to add, in one light they look red and in a different one they look more orangybrown. If that makes sence...
Once again I confess to having no expertise but I can't see giving garnets to the kids to lose as being the best option. I trust the smilie meant that was an exaggeration.

Does the paperwork say how many carats ?

Hi,

Thank you.

No there was no indication of carats, only what I have said above.
Depends on the colour of your garnets, this may give you an idea, but take the jewellery to your local jewelers/valuers for an accurate assessment..

Hope it helps:)
The certificate data you provide is pretty meaningless. The size is obvious by just looking at them, but all the other figures should be single numbers. Instead, they cover the full range of each characteristic that will be found in any garnet.

That's what I thought Heathfield.

It is more a generic autentication rather than a individual one for this particular set.

Costume jewelery I think :)
