However, watching the rush from our balcony every morning, while sipping coffee, was a highlight because it was absolutely hilarious - it really was laugh out loud funny. It's amazing how quick fat women can run (and it was mainly women) when they're determined to bag their favourite spot. As they got closer to where they wanted to baste they'd throw their towels some distance to land on the loungers. There were arguments, there were people falling over because the poolside had been hosed - it really was terrific entertainment and to this day one of the funniest sights I've ever seen.
The irony is that there was a fabulous beach a 5 minute walk away with plentiful loungers and brollies, there were beach bars, ice-cream kiosks, snack bars and kids play parks so this is where we spent our time.

They're just as bad on the beach though. People go down at 5am and put their towels on the best spots and a trend that I have seen a couple of times is people bribing the pool boys to do it for them. I reported a staff member in Thailand for that. Couldn't understand why all the best beds were taken when there was nobody there and it turned out the head pool attendant was taking backhanders from people.
