Then surely when "bad news" is announced (e.g. "The UK is languishing 121st in the list of the world's exporters") then the same must apply - bad news for a few but it makes no difference to the rest of us.
However, it doesn't seem to work like that. Bad news is always greeted with accusations and blame: "It's the Tories' fault" "It's Sunaks's fault" and (especially) "It's because of Brexit".
Why is that, I wonder?
