Why is someone referred to as "Bolshy" when they're being awkward? Is there a defined reason why the jolly old Bolsheviks have attracted this label?

The earliest-recorded use of the word was in a letter by the writer D H Lawrence in 1918, when Bolshevism was a major force in Russia. The Bolsheviks were seen by the ruling/upper classes of Europe as people who were violently 'anti' just about everything the rich held dear. As a result, the word came to be used about anybody who was stroppy and ill-disciplined.
