Might not be the sort of thing you're looking for. But, would he like an experience? If so. I can highly recommend this, though I don't know if London is convenient for him.

Thanks for the ideas so far.  He's good at things like Rubik Cubes - or construction kits.  Anything that presents a challenge.

A Huzzle puzzle level 5 or 6 is a real challenge, they are wonderfully tactile and very well made. There are many different versions.

For Christmas, I bought my son (25) a model kit of an illuminated globe. It's really wuite nice and not at all amateur modelish. I would do a link but it keep being sent to my Amazon app. If you search in Amazon for illuminated globe model kit it should come up.

Those Huzzle puzzles look great. My son would love them

My grandson liked a multi-function pen, and he's techie.

I would ask a 16 years old what they would like.

A 3D pen? 

Uses pla filament in all colours. Create own 3d models, drawings etc.
