Looks like a setter's mistake to me.

Food, oil, coal, petrol, wood...

Letter count? Full clue?

Question Author

My apologies! I'm new here & didn't realise I'd actually pressed & posted without finishing.

clue: 7d Some contribute new fuel in bottles (6)

We have "butene" but think that this gas isn't "fuel in bottles" - that would be "butane". Butene is used industrially as a gas.

It's bothering my other half, who reckons the compiler has made a slight slip-up,  but I'm open to comments!

Many thanks, enjoy a puzzling weekend!

Looks like a setter's mistake to me.

its hidden in the clue

Some contri "bute ne" w fuel in bottles

"bottles" is the descriptor to suggest it is hidden in the clue

Isn't the desciptor for "hidden" already covered by "Some..."?

Question Author

Yes, exactly what we thought (otherwise "some"is superfluous!"). I think I'll just have to accept that this is definitely a (rare) setter error.

Strangely, I find that quite unsettling!

Thank you for all your thoughts.
