before they start their spiel? 

I find it so annoying...it's like those flamingos or whatever bouncing their heads back in the 70s and totally unnecessary.

Perhaps they are acknowledging their viewers first. It's better than shaking their head and tutting.

the feeling is mutual and you are worse than the flamingos, not that there are that many in the Czech Republic, though I don't have the statistics to that.

Don't do Facebook so can't see link.

I always thought it was something for them to do during a possible time lapse between them and the studio, so they don't look as if they're just waiting dumbly. 

I think it's to acknowledge that they are hearing correctly. 

Yes it avoids the anchor throwing to them, only to discover they can't hear.

So it seems it's all about the audio link DT.
