can anyone point me in the direction of the origins of carved spitit faces used in america, kind of like green man, totems etc. I just need the origins please.

I would start with "Explore Green Men" by Mercia MacDermott, published by Heart of Albion Press at �9.95
In Native American belief, it's the MANITOU, the animistic nature spirit present in a tree, which is believed to survive after the wood has been made into something else.
Most of the wooden faces used in American are of American Indian origin. They had a huge variety of totems, masks, secret societies, and shamans. The Manitou was only for some tribes, but is a good example of this kind of thing.
