Who would win in a fight between a Bear and a Shark? Assuming the fighting conditions were fair, and neither animal had any advantages. I just read the book and rather frustratingly you never find out the outcome...

The book was Bear vs Shark by Chris Bachelder... I think the fight was staged on a beach in the shallow water. I'd personally put money on the Bear.
It would depend on the rules. Two falls, two submissions or a knockout the shark would edge it. Marquess of Queensbury, the bear would definitely win.

no one could win as there is no place where they could fight. The bear would drown in water, the shark would die on land
You do pretty much find out the answer. The shark wins in bear vs shark I, although controversially as the computer animated bear had a smaller head than a real bear would have. Just before bear vs shark II, a deal is struck to do bear vs shark III in miami, and it is commented on how the shark won the first one, and how the programmers need to keep their job, which pretty much implies a win for the bear making bear vs shark III a 'decider'. Myself, I'm a shark man, everytime.
