I suppose it depends if it was re-usable as a salvaged part  (and for what car) or broken down for whatever metals it contains.

google says £10 - £400 in UK / up to $1000 in USA.

Are they sold as scrap or as replacements? New cats can be very expensive.

it contains platinum which is more expensive than Gold

Not just platinum but also palladium and rhodium, both more expensive than gold. Palladium is worth around £1794 per ounce, rhodium more than £12,259, and platinum about £771 per ounce.

In a violent country like the USA it would have been safer to ignore the theft.

sandyRoe, in Montana State, USA they get up to 400 for a real good one. but this is through a specific guy who comes around 3 or 4 times a month and he pays more than a scrap yard would.
