It and another of his works are on temporary display in the Ulster Museum.

Maybe its me,but did Roman soldiers have that type of armour back in the year zero.Looks more a 15-16 century type.

That was normal back then, as was including the face of wealthy patrons in various roles in the painting

The armour was probably contemporary. How could he know what Roman armour looked like?

Wasnt Caravaggio not Italian?If he didnt know what Roman soldiers were like at the time of Jesus,then nobody would know.

It was probably easier to paint the armour of soldiers you'd see than start doing research into styles from a thousand years ago.
