What does it mean when they say, " the FTSE is at a high of 6140"

It is an "index" and there isn't really any units. It is just a measure of the value of the companies, compared to a base figure of 100 at some arbitary point in time. I am sure there is a detailed explanation somewhere, but hopefully this gives some idea.
