... they're dealing with basic communication skills and toilet training.  In one school at the start of Reception, eight of 27 four-year-olds came to school in nappies, and in one instance a six year old came to school in nappies.

I can't see any excuse for this.  What on earth is going with parents?  An epidemic of lazyitis?

It's not only toilet training - it's an inability to communicate too.  It's almost as though these children have been completely ignored for all of their young lives.

Once Labour get into power Untitled things will change. No more feral parents,no more feral children. No more lazy parenting under Starmer.

I have a friend who is a Reception teacher and she had a child who came to school still sucking a dummy.

What did she do, omg?

She used the tactic that when you start school you are a big girl and big girls and boys don't need a dummy.  She also spoke to the parent and suggested the same strategy at home. I think she also used rewards when the child voluntarily gave it up at school.  It took a while but it worked.

A teacher's job isn't easy that's for sure.

Parents are going back to work earlier and their grandparents are either also still working or too far away. That's the difference between this and previous generations ...

The children aren't left home alone though.  Nurseries are supposed to potty train too.

^and speak with the children.

I think disposable nappies have a lot to do with this.  A wet disposable is far more comfortable for the child and a lot less work for the parent than terry nappies.

Parents were keen to get their kids out of nappies when they had buckets of dirty nappies to wash and dry every day.  Nappy rash was a horrible guilt trip for parents, too.

You are right, Barry.

Disgusting useless lazy parents. Should have the children taken off them.

//If people have had their children in a nursery, the nursery should also ensure these basics are instilled.//

The nursery shouldn't be used to make up for lazy parents, it's the parent's responsibility.

The use of disposable nappies has contributed to the laziness, there was nothing like a soggy terry nappy to encourage a toddler to use their potty.  Now parents say their dears cannot possibly be expected to be out of nappies until they can write a note, clearly all those thousands of us whose toddlers were out of nappies by 18 momths were guilty of abuse!

If a child starts school in nappies for no, certified medical reason then the parents should be available to deal with them.  There are supposed to be two adults present when a nappy is changed, who is watching the rest of the class while this time is being wasted?

Presumably both of them. And the other kids learn something too.
