My cat has just got back from the vet with a buster collar. I have no idea why they are called that and even the vet did not know - any ideas ?

Is it the same as the Cone of Shame?

Wiki doesn't tell us why it's called a buster collar, I've no idea.

It looks like it was a brand name

https://www.thefreedictionary.com/buster+collar

From Wiki - the collars are named from the ruffs worn in the Elizabethan era.

Kruuse, a Danish company, invented the original buster collar. Perhaps it means something in Danish or perhaps it's just a name they invented.

Yes, you're right - it's the brand name.  B&Q is one outlet that sells the Buster brand, there are others  https://www.diy.com/departments/buster-inflatable-collar-blue-xxl-/5059269065409_BQ.prd?alt=true

Wiki tells us it is called " an Elizabethan collarE collarpet ruff or pet cone (sometimes humorously called a treat funnellamp-shaderadar dishdog-savercollar cone, or cone of shame)" but makes no mention of 'buster'.

As has been stated, the Danish company Jørgen Kruuse A/S registered 'Buster' as a trademark for their veterinary products in 2004:
