Were You Sent To Get The Papers When You Were Little?
I went to the newsagents for the News of the World and the Sunday Mirror.

//.....There were vending machines in the street that anybody could get cigarettes from.//
There were 2 cig vending machines outside a shop on the main road near us. They sold packs of 5 cigs, Woodbines and Park Drive for 1/- a packet. The thing about them was that if some unscrupulous little gits waited till a bus came along, they could kick the bottom of the cig machine without the noise being heard, and the 1/- coins would come flying up out of the back of the dispenser tray. I wonder who would ever do such a dispicable thing?😄
As well as a daily paper round, I stood outside David Brown's engineering plant every Sunday morning selling newspapers to the shift-workers as they left the factory. After that, I did my Sunday paper round delivering papers like the Times, and the Observer with their magazines and supplements as well as the Sunday scandal sheets. God, was that paper bag heavy! My round was up a very steep hill and its avenues and drives that branched off, as well as two blocks of flats - no lifts, so numerous steps to climb. I must have had like a pit-pony.
On the plus side, I used to deliver comics too, which I read on the way round. ☺
