In my opinion, the bookies are at fault for accepting such bets.

Say I went into my local bookies and said that I would like to place a bet on a certain (random) day of the year (within the next 12 months), and I was the person who got to chose that random date – do you think they would accept that bet?

Because that is what they have done in accepting bets on the election date; if I was to tell my mates of the random data I was going to chose (so they could place a bet) on what basis could the bookies complain?

Similarly, if the bookies were to accept bets on the name I would give to my newly born daughter and I informed my mates that the chosen name was ‘Beatrice’ (and they betted on this name), the bookies have only themselves to blame for accepting the bet.

how would the bookies know?

no you can't blame the bookies they'd have no clue who he was.

If nobody knew who he was, then how did he get found out?

Question Author

For clarification, at the time of placing the bet, the bookies would know that I was the person who chose the random date (and the date of the election).

...and the name I was to give my daughter.

yes but how would a random bookie know that this person was an advisor or whatever to sunak.

the responsibility lies upon tories to act morally. and... well...

You're tying yourself in knots hymie. The bookies offered odds on the various possible dates and punters came in and picked one or more dates. As for your child's name why would they offer odds on that when clearly you will be able to determine the outcome.

As the person who chooses the election date, I know that as well as my daughter’s name – but if they accept such bets (on the election date, or my daughter’s name), that is their look-out.

Rishi must be tearing his hair out. What else is going to go wrong?

At least a Tory has won something.....small blessings.

I seem to recall that the bookies were offering odds on the name of Prince Andrew’s first daughter; and I believe that a close friend of his placed a bet on the correct name (more fool the bookies).

this "tweet" contains a graph (from Betfair, via the FT) of betting on a July election.

the Y axis is only monetary value - it doesn't show whether it's loads of different punters, or a few betting telephone number sums.

what a fitting epitaph for the past 14 years of Tory rule. utterly grubby shameless and self-serving to the end. we have been ruled by clowns for a decade and a half.
