Help With Genius 253 Please

i've got a lot of answers but haven't cracked the theme/method yet, help with crossings where I think I know the answers (but not what to enter)would be welcome:

10 across should be a latin word? 14 across should begin with h

but 9 down isn't a latinate version of truth?

 5 down can't end in d?

13 across should end in s?

I think you must be doing the puzzle or have finished it like the geniuses you are, so I haven't given more detail of the clues

The entries bear no obvious resemblance to the answers to the clues. The 'modification' leads to a total change, it's a device that has been used in previous crosswords over the years.

14a does begin with H

5d does end in D (13a starts with D)

5a 3 letter word for family + 1 letter "drug" + abreviation for sister

3d is one of the 6 - don't try and enter it until you know how to manipulate = but the answer before manipulation is a card game - what type of number 5 is +abbreviation for run over

7d is an anagram of the first word but once again it is a manipulated word so don't input until you know how

D17d Dune becomes Duke! and think of New Zealand

I thought I had nearly all the manipulation instruction letters but the only clear word I have is a mathematical one

I think 15a means 'act' but can't see what I do with 'picket'

23d is another one of the 6 - couples is a golfer + usual abbreviation for university. But don't tryto input that answer as the input after manipulation is totally different!

so near and yet so far, so 3,5,7,9,23 down are 5 of the 6 manipulated,could I ask what the last one is

I may give up as with your help I've got all the others I think and the letters in the ones to alter look so unpromising and the penny is no nearer dropping

Quinol, once again I was in a rush - but I'm back now...

A hint for 20. Miles leads to the usual abbreviation and  the Kane is a topical footballer (so 'leaving husband' is an instruction to drop a letter).

Quinol the erroneous letters spell 5 words (6,6,4,4,6)

Do you know what a "first two words" is as that is how you need to manipulate the 6 answers?

a million thanks jj and nac for all your help with the cipher in Genius, now I'm only struggling with a sticky patch in the southeast - I think my downs are syntax a jazzer and a homily, but I never understood the miles kane thing so I don't know what to alter for 20 across, and I can't see the misprints in 8 and 19 down though I think my answers are right

Quinol, I saw you'd mentioned this on Matakari's Spectator thread. The answer to 20 A is Marry, M (abbreviation for Miles) and Harry (Kane, footballer) lost his H, husband.
