Today the 'West Indies' is more often referred to as the Caribbean.
Definition of countries ... as distinct from dependency or departement of France or part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands or US Commonwealth, etc etc
Belize is on the South American mainland ...
Anguilla / Cayman Islands / Montserrat are all dependencies
British Virgin Islands dependency (shared Virgin Islands with US)
So, that leaves 10 COUNTRIES from the list above ....
Bahamas is not technically in the Caribbean Sea .... some reference books, therefore, exclude Bahamas ....
And now ... at a stretch we are down to 9 !!!! BUT
There are these countries also ....
Cuba
Haiti (one half of Island of Hispaniola)
Dominican Republic (other half of Island of Hispaniola)
And Now We Are Twelve( maybe 13, with Barbados) ...... all members of the UN as bona-fide countries!
Annabeth ... do put us all out of our misery and post the answer when you get it, please!
