wary of e mail

im been sent an attachement to my e mail but im wary of opening it in case its one of them damm virus's how can i check its safe or otherwise before opening it?

I'm with Yahoo and they scan all attachments with Norton. If it's not safe then they don't let you download it.

I would suggest contacting the sender and ask them. However if it is from someone you don't know, with an attachment of around 21-35kb as a zip, exe, or similar, just delete it! No point in taking chances.

Theres quite a few virus emails floating at present, a few ways to spot them are:

1)Some have something like Re:Word Document, Re:Paybill query, or Re:I Love You(or something similarly innocent sounding) in the subject line but have only come from 1 PC to yours, ie the e-mail doesn't show it has previously been sent by someone else........

2)And don't open any e-mails with .pif attachments from anyone you don't trust as they are a swine to get rid off, if they have a virus attached..........

3)I have had some harmful e-mails despatched from sources such as *****@gov.co.uk, but don't be fooled into opening them and thinking that person must be a trustful source.......

4)Don't mess about, get yourself upto date Virus checker, ie Nortons 2004, and use the e-mail in/out checker. Also firewall software is becoming a must.......

I'm with MSN and they scan attachments before they are opened with Macafee.

if u r using outlook, then configure your norton antivirus to scanning incoming email (if u have it)

Agreed, don't open anything that ends in .bat, .scr or .pif as well as .exe and .zip files. What's the attachment that you've been sent called?

I delete anything as a matter of course if it's not from someone I know. If there desperate to get hold of me they'll find another way!

If you dont recognise the sender then DELETE IT. It is probably crap anyway, I have up to 10 a day.
