Former Metropolitan Police officer Craig Carter has been jailed for 16 months for stealing cash from a man who collapsed and died in the street.

seem harsh, they let shoplifters off with 100s of offences.

The courts probably expect marginally better behaviour from the police.

only caught because the dead man ( er whilst alive) changed the money for one purpose and then keeled over.

apparently the corpse lay there for 6 h.

It is a big deal - I was involved ( very very periphersally) where a man had been stabbed in a men's bog of a pub. The first responders piled in including girls. dead. The initial police photos didnt match the later police photos - his wallet was rifled. So the intial responders became suspects ( a la Arena - where the beggar 'who helped' also er helped himself to their lu-lu).

The charged man was acquitted ( the  defence had great fun pointing at everyone else) and the police said " er we think his friend did it.oops"

The first responder whom I knew said  " I think I will just walk on by the next time someone  is stabbed"

It was a really stupid thing to do.  He was wearing a body camera, he filmed himself stealing the money.

It was also a very cruel thing to do - steal from a dead man.

Do we know it was a "moment"? Maybe he'd regularly been abusing his position of authority, possibly his colleagues knew and didn't say anything, then this deplorable incident was investigated.

It's the correct sentence but yes TTT, yet another example of two tier justice.

There are around 34K staff in the Met, there will always be bad apples and although Police vetting is being tightened it is useless unless someone has committed (and be caught) of crime before.

Or if their colleagues don't report incidents, or even have a laugh about them on their whatsapp group.

Drmorgans is correct - who knows how often he had done this!? And if it was a one-off mad moment then he has been an incredibly stupid man and thrown away a 23 year career.
