I would only accept a quote from someone that actually came to the house, then get it in writing and make sure you tell them exactly what you want doing.  Don't forget if you change things you want done after receiving the quote it could end up costing you much more.

Shedman, do you think it reasonable to charge for a quote? Whenever I have tradespeople come to quote I always offer them money if they don't ask. Some people think I'm made but I pay for their time.

I don't if they take one look and are gone within five minutes. They don't get the job

A builder isn't going to go to the trouble of preparing a sensible quote (materials/labour/etc,) without a detailed plan of what is required & some conviction that he will be hired for the job. I don't think JJ is at that advanced stage.

She just wants a rough idea, I think

I haven't bothered trawling through the previous but wasn't £10s of thousands mentioned once?

That was for a pre built cabin supplied with ready installed shower, loo, sink, widow, tilling - a sort of fully equipped posh portacabin.

barry1010, most builders would not want paying to give a quote for something that small.  Some do charge for quotes on bigger jobs as they would take much planning and often the need for an architect to be involved.

jj keeps asking about this but noone on here can decide for her. She has been given lots of ideas but needs a builder there to see what can be done.

Yes definitely needs to see the job as much of the work will involve putting in power, drains, water and sewerage.  If these are not near it could be expensive.
