I would only accept a quote from someone that actually came to the house, then get it in writing and make sure you tell them exactly what you want doing.  Don't forget if you change things you want done after receiving the quote it could end up costing you much more.

Shedman, do you think it reasonable to charge for a quote? Whenever I have tradespeople come to quote I always offer them money if they don't ask. Some people think I'm made but I pay for their time.

I don't if they take one look and are gone within five minutes. They don't get the job

A builder isn't going to go to the trouble of preparing a sensible quote (materials/labour/etc,) without a detailed plan of what is required & some conviction that he will be hired for the job. I don't think JJ is at that advanced stage.

She just wants a rough idea, I think

I haven't bothered trawling through the previous but wasn't £10s of thousands mentioned once?

That was for a pre built cabin supplied with ready installed shower, loo, sink, widow, tilling - a sort of fully equipped posh portacabin.

barry1010, most builders would not want paying to give a quote for something that small.  Some do charge for quotes on bigger jobs as they would take much planning and often the need for an architect to be involved.

jj keeps asking about this but noone on here can decide for her. She has been given lots of ideas but needs a builder there to see what can be done.

Yes definitely needs to see the job as much of the work will involve putting in power, drains, water and sewerage.  If these are not near it could be expensive.

Been looking at some of your other questions on this subject.

Have you thought of installing a lift - might be quicker than a stair lift.

you also mentioned that you didn't want to give up your dinning room.  Have you got a garage attached to the house?  If so, why not knock through into that?

"I do hope it is not one of my hairbrained schemes"

While not wanting to be the bearer of bad news...

I'm using my own experience of arranging for a step to be put below our French doors, replacing the small deck that has gone the way of all things.

Two 3x2 paving slabs mounted on concrete blocks is all I want installed, I have all the gubbins, but my man brings me tales of woe about what happens when we try to sell the house, height regulations, endless piffle and drivel but none of it involves plonking water, live mains and a Chinese glorified tanning booth against the back wall and thinking it'll be fine.

I'll guess the instal quotes are astronomical to try and put you off.
