Why are car adverts so pretentious?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.They are, but it's quite difficult to advertise a car, without giving a list of statistics - an instant turn-off for the viewer, but in fact, the kind of thing the viewer would really like to know, i.e. how much is it / what insurance group is it / will it fit in my garage / how long a delivery time is there / what gadgets can i get, and so on. So, advertisers go for the more subliminal 'You really would like this wouldn't you?' angle, which does lead to an emphisis on mini-dramas, and very little about the product. Pretentious? Probably, but things could be worse, they could be trying to get you to buy a brand of sugar - the mind boggles!
They are trying to sell a lifestyle not a car - if we purchased cars based upon our functional requirements then we'd all buy Trabants (or Vauxhalls!).
We all want our car to be a reflection of who we are or who would like to be perceived to be - manufacturers/ad agencies are aware of this and develop ads accordingly.
