when Greenwich Mean Time was first adopted as the world standard, its main rival was Paris Mean Time. Going to 1 and 2 hours ahead would put us on Paris Mean Time after all and next thing you know, people would be questioning Brexit and eating French cuisinefor dinner. Can't have that. Defend British darkness!

I bought myself a SAD light last autumn. I do think it helped. No miracles as O_G said, but I didn't feel as weepy/ emotional/tired as I'd been. I almost got it out again a few weeks ago when the weather took a turn for the worse. Time now though, before I start to feel the effect of more darkness. 

That means in North Scotland in the summer it won't get dark until nearly midnight and in the Winter it won't get light until nealy 10 am.

strikes me as a good reason not to go and live in the North Scotland - and we havent even got  onto  midgies

yeah foo, if you go to Philae - up on a wall ( sand see?) a marble plaque celebrating the recording of the temple by the French scientific expendition.  Latitude wrong of course as it is predicated on Paree being 0'
