Here's Cookie taking a moment to smell a flower.
Buy them scratching posts. Mine have got a couple and when they use them (regularly) I say what a good girl they are. If they scratch the furniture, I gently remove their claws, say "No" and then employ distraction. To be fair, mine now only go for the furniture out of pure devilment (and they jolly well know what they are doing) but if they really want a good scratch they go for their posts.
Black cats are not re-homed as much as others. Very sad. But at least 3 of us on here are flying the flag for these black beauties.
When I heard about the two babies who were abandoned on the roadside I cared not about their colour, they needed a slave and I had a cat shaped hole to fill (it was only a couple of weeks after my darling ASBO died). I really only wanted one cat but there was no way I was going to separate them. The Cat Distribution System at its finest.

Despite this tower being half covered in scratching material both still like to have a go at the furniture.
And that's a real improvement , the kitten, Cookie, used to like to sharpen his claws on my trousers, with my leg still inside them.
