How To Convert Word .Doc Documents To Docx
I'm a bit rusty with WORD but recent docs are saved as docx. Do older ones need converting?

Almost certainly not. All modern word processing software is 'backward compatible' and can therefore handle the older .doc files, as well as .docx ones.
If you did want to convert a .doc file to .docx (although I can't think why you would), you could simply open it in Word (or in any other word processor, such as LibreOffice Writer) and use File > Save As to save it in the newer format.
Both .doc and .docs are Microsoft's own proprietary formats though. Many people prefer to use .odt these days, which is an international standard that's not linked to any particular software firm. (The only downside of using .odt is that people using Pages on Apple computers can't open the files. That's simply because Apple consistently refuse to adopt international standards on everything from charger cables to file formats).
