But it wasn’t. And if I was I would ask the same question about that.
“Downing Street first began hosting events to celebrate Diwali in 2009 under the then Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.”
Yes I read that, ken. So perhaps I should have asked “Why did it ever begin and why was it continued?” And on reflection I would also ask “How many people have been invited round on Christmas Day for turkey and all the trimmings?"
“As drmorgans says - would there be sausage rolls if it was World Vegan Day?”
Why shouldn’t there be? Meat eaters do not stop eating meat because someone has decided it is “World vegan day”.
It is doubtful whether, at this event, all those attending were either vegetarian/vegan or tee-total. So why should those who are not see their dietary preferences denied? Why is it reasonable at any gathering to expect the preferences of some of those attending denied just because there are others present who do not share those preferences?
Let’s consider this: imagine there was the annual dinner and dance of the National Association of Carnivores. Meat is obviously high up on the menu. But being a dinner and dance the Association’s members will want to bring partners, some of whom may be vegetarian of vegan. Would it be reasonable for the event organisers to announce that since this was a carnivores’ event, no vegetarian or vegan options will be available?
Apologies can be cheap, regardless of the size of the hump being moaned at. Where you need to be careful is when an undeserved apology, given just to shut folk up, is used against you as if it were an admission of something you need to compensate for. But those with political savvy ought to be able to spot the difference, or else they shouldn't be in politics.
