Maybe whoever substituted the alcohol with methanol was unaware of the dangers of ingesting methanol – even small amounts can cause blindness and/or paralysis.

A tragedy for those who died and their loved ones.

What you may not know is that during the American prohibition, the government of the day deliberately added methanol (and other poisons) to industrial alcohol, knowing it might find its way into illicit drinks.

It is estimated that at least 10,000 died as a result of this, with many more suffering the poisoning effects.  Despite knowing this, the government continued adding poison to alcohol.

Perhaps TORATORATORA can elaborate on the process that might lead to the production of ethanol or just post the Google link?

Meant to post "methanol"...

trolling reported.

Fermentation produces both methanol & ethanol. They boil at different temperatures and the fractionation process should separate them if done correctly. With a primitive still it's easy enough to screw up.
