I think the nation has woken up to the error it has made.

It IS a message in that so many people feel sufficiently at odds with what Labour is doing to register their disapproval so soon. I don't think this has ever happened before.

Wasn't there a petition for a second referundum on rejoining the EU, which attracted 4 million+ votes, and didn't a certain politician say that we should recognise that many people were unhappy with the result, and the Government should recognise this petition and at least debate it in Parliament?  Who was that politician? Oh yes it was a certain Keir Starmer.

I believe that over 100,000 signatures would trigger a debate. Has Starmer said that he won't do that?

I don't know, Atheist, but the wording under the petition says that at 100,000 signatures it will be considered for debate. No guarantee.

what is there to debate? what would be the point?

this petition is like the ultimate "i demand to speak to the manager" lol. it's absolutely useless armchair activism.

I wonder who would decide whether or not to have a debate; wouuld it be Starmer's decision or that of some independent body, or the Speaker? In my view it would be a waste of Government time, although Anti-Starmites might enjoy having a bash at Labour.

Does anyone remember whether or not there was a debate following the Brexit petition?

It was debated yes Atheist

In that case, I expect the new petition would be debated, otherwise there would be a huge clamour from the ones who 'lost' the election.

what is there to debate?

There is nothing to debate. The petition has already achieved it's aim. Embarrased the government, got the 5C media ignoring it until their media interest overtook their lefty ideology. It's got all the non tories that claim they didn't vote labour either spitting out their organic peace porridge and overall made the world aware of what a shower of unpleasantness the new government is. All achieved in less than 5 months. I'd say it's definitely done it's job and it's still going

How has the government been embarrassed by this? about 10 million people didn't vote for it in June and about 3 million have signed this. i think you're trying to convince yourself you have done something when you haven't.

the farmers marching through london a few days ago... that actually was an embarrassment for the government. they put on their wellies and got off their backside and made their case very effectively outside parliament. they forced politicians to look directly at the people they were screwing over and made their presence tangibly felt.

this petition is an absolute nothing. it will mean something when those 2.7 million get off their bottoms and do some organising.

Latinum vetitum est?

"...about 10 million people didn't vote for it in June"

Actually it's somewhat different to that.

Of those who voted, 19.1m voted for somebody other than a Labour candidate whilst 19.9m did not bother to vote at all.

So a total of 39.0m of an electorate numbering 48.7m did not vote for the party which formed the government.

Comments on this petition seem to be suggesting thatt only those who voted for parties other than Labour are signatories to it. It may well be that many who voted Labour have also signed, perhaps on the basis that "I was duped."

it's possible newjudge but i really doubt it
