Anyone heard of this? I know what it means now after googling it and it's something I've been curious about for a while when listening to some young women speaking, usually on tv or social media, thinking, why do they speak like that? I've always found it rather irritating.

Me too, Tilly.  'Vocal Fry' is a new expression to me, but I suppose that it is what applies when I have to sing a male bass part and get down to bottom C ,or the 2 notes I can reach below. To explain, I am a lowish alto and have 3 octaves, so I quite often have had to help out a bass line.

Yes, it is irritating in speech, no need for it.

I can't stand the upspeak.  And the Jamaican patois "laak" even though none of the black, white, Asian kids have never been anywhere Jamaica laak.

Yeah, but I bet most of us had a different accent from our elders.

...Innit!

Ludocruz's link is hilarious, especially the twist at the end (pity about the foul language tho').

Yes, I did like Ludocruz's link. 😁 I've never heard much 'vocal fry' in real life, but I live in the backwater of beyond  .

Regarding London accents today and the Jamaican edge to the vowels, the 'yoof' now sound nothing like my Cockney husband.
Things change.

Yes ludo, rising inflection at the end of every sentence is another annoying trait.

Think Boris Johnson invented it ...lol.

Why is it acceptable in men but not women? Sean Connery's Bond is a good example

Apologies for the swear words in the YouTube clip. I'm glad you liked it despite that 👍

I had no idea that stupid voice had a name!
or should I say an actual name!

Anyone watching this week's Four in a Bed?  There is a lot of vocal fry going on with a couple of the women, sounds as if they're trying to out fry each other.  Sounds bonkers
