Since 2005 I've had an email only acc with virgin .net. I had a problem last week and now I've can't log in. They are telling me that they don't support email only acc now with virgin media. So I've lost the account, how sad, I had ppl on there I can't contact any more

Typical Virgin (by tradition, they never go all the way).

They should have let you know they were closing your account, very poor service 

Yes, my experience with Virgin was equally disappointing.

I'm now back with BT who are IME much better. My e-mail provider is Yahoo.

They sent notifications out in October, advising people to get new emails accounts before December

If you're on Facebook or similar maybe your lost contacts will find you; maybe you could look for them on the socials.

It's frustrating when you lose contact details, I always back mine up.  I learned the hard way some years ago

Of course this the the problem with something free, you are at the mercy of the provider.

In the short term, try phoning 0800 519 6986 to see if Virgin Media can reactivate your account, even if only temporarily.

For the longer term, open an account with GMX:
https://www.gmx.co.uk/

If your Virgin Media account has been reactivated, use the GMX 'Mail Collector' facility to get mail sent your old Virgin address automatically forwarded to your new GMX one.  Further, look for an option within your Virgin account to 'Export Contacts'.  Use that to create a file which can then be imported into your GMX contacts.
