I have read that the inhalation of smoke from open fires are as unhealthy to breathe in, as smoking.  Is there anything that is safe to burn in my open fireplace please?

Surely the idea is to make sure your chimney draws properly, it's not normal to have smoke in the room with an open fire.

Just burn what you want, long as the chimney is swept, you'll be fine.
