This may sound a stupid question but is it dangerous to line the bottom of the oven with foil ?
My mum has always done it but my mate reckons it can trigger electric shocks.
I have just cleaned my oven and it was horrible so I thought if I lined it I could just keep chucking the mucky foil away but daren't do it if it's going to kill me !!
Help please.

I line the bottom of my electric fan oven with foil, and I keep it weighted down with a baking tray also covered in foil.

I have not been electrocuted - yet!
I think it can damage your oven's heating ability. However, I found this and thought it a useful idea.

"Can I line the bottom of my oven with aluminum foil?
To avoid possible heat damage to your oven, we do not recommend using aluminum foil to line the bottom of your oven. Rather, we recommend that you place a sheet of heavy duty aluminum foil on the oven rack beneath the pie or casserole you are baking. The foil should be only a few inches larger than the baking pan to allow for proper heat circulation. The foil will catch any drips before they reach the oven bottom."
I've always done it in oven and grill pan and never had any problems. Saves a lot of cleaning. Anything for an easy life I say.
I shall now put that idea I found into use myself! :o)
I cover my grill pan with foil & the rack that goes inside.
In the oven I keep a baking tray to catch juices, crumbs etc....

Thanks both. Perhaps I should just put a baking tray in the bottom. I don't want it to interfere with the heat control.

I use foil in my grill tray & put a large baking tray at the bottom of my oven for any drips. Thankfully the sides are self cleaning!

I hate cleaning the oven, such a messy tedious chore! ;o$
you can buy a sheet from lakeland for this purpose - it can go in dishwasher too my friend has just bought one cos her mother always goes on about hers and tells her she should have one.

I've got a lakeland catalogue. I'll have a look.
Aldi have the same lining as available from Lakeland at a much reduced price. In store as a special on Sunday. I've used the lining for years and it's wonderful.

Lining the bottom of an oven with aluminum foil sheet is a common practice many people consider for catching spills, drips, or food debris during cooking. While it might seem like a simple solution for keeping your oven clean, it comes with potential risks and drawbacks that should be considered before using this method.

Is It Safe to Use an Aluminum Foil Sheet in the Oven?

Using an aluminum foil sheet to line the oven floor can create problems. The foil can block heat and airflow, disrupting the oven's heating process. This can lead to uneven cooking and may even damage your oven’s heating elements. In some cases, foil placed directly on the bottom of the oven can melt due to high temperatures, leaving behind a sticky residue that is difficult to remove.

Alternative Uses of Aluminum Foil Sheets in the Oven

If you still want to use an aluminum foil sheet to manage spills, there are safer ways to do so:

Place on a Rack: Lay the foil on a lower rack beneath your food rather than directly on the oven floor. This helps catch drips while maintaining proper heat circulation.

Use a Baking Tray: A baking tray or cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil can achieve the same effect without the risks associated with lining the oven bottom.

Protect Specific Areas: If your concern is protecting specific spots, consider using smaller pieces of foil around problem areas, but avoid covering large portions.

Check Your Oven Manual

Modern ovens, especially those with self-cleaning features, often caution against using aluminum foil sheets directly inside the appliance. Always consult your oven’s manual for specific guidelines to prevent voiding warranties or causing damage.
