Can anyone help me understand this news article?  Grandmother has had to apply for 35 briding visas to remain in Australia.

Is that since the deportation process started or since she first moved to Australia?  She claims she believed she had permanent residency

This is a classic case of bloody minded officials using the opposite of common sense.

Can you tell me when she started applying for the bridging visas?

I can't fathom what that is on about, it says she has to apply every 3 months too. Maybe it also has to be done retrospectively but the point is that whilst no doubt technically correct the officials should use a bit of common.

Question Author

Apparently bridging visas can only be granted to people who are in Australia legally - Australia says she has no legal right to be there.

The report is full of contradictions

Question Author

Having read that link it seems people who are in Australia unlawfully can apply for bridging visas

Looks like her believing she had permanent residency status but not actually checking for details has left her in a bit of a pickle.

It was ever so.

Can anyone think of a current situation where many things are going through unchecked on the word of others?
