Yesterday I was amazed to see a beautIviful Peacock butterfly resting in the sunshine on my glass front door. I've never seen a butterfly in January before.  Is this normal and will it survive?

It's quite unusual and would be great to record it.

This will be one from the Autumn that has chosen to stay and hibernate. It will have woken a bit early and needs to be somewhere inside like a shed if it is to survive until Spring.

Yes they usually emerge in the spring but will no doubt have found a warm shelter again today.

It's good to record though, as it helps to indicate any pattern of early risers as opposed to the one or two.

We saw this in 2019 on Feb 15th - a bit later than yours but still winter.

Thank you so much for the information.  I never normally see anything interesting like this.  Fingers crossed it survives!!
