2.5% GDP is suggested for now but I think the 5% mentioned is what is needed to send a clear message. UK currently spends 3 times the defence budget on work shy scum, so we can easiliy afford it.
I think the US is within its rights to baulk at doing the heavy lifting alone.

This is the weakness of our economic system. For sure, since Russia has opted to go to war on a neighbour then defence should be beefed up as one of the priorities, even if the amount is up for debate.
US has the most power, and many things in it's favour. They ought not baulk as being the main contributer to keeping western interests safe. If it wants aggressive and hostile other world powers as their neighbours on all their borders they simply have to try upsetting allies and think only of isolating themselves. That'd work.
