I assume you are talking about a dash-cam.  I've had several and all have formatted the card automatically for first use. Most cameras cycle the card ie, when it's full they start overwriting the first recods with new ones - some files may be marked by the camera to say that they should not be overwritten (incidents you want to keep). Most cameras recommend you re-format regularly to remove "saved" files when you're sure you don't need them any longer, otherwise the card will become full and recording will fail There will be a menu in the camera to reformat the card.

Thanks. Meant DASH CAN you're right

Incidentally, when I think my card might be getting full I remove it from the camera, put it in my computer and check that it's recording properly. If there's nothing I want on the card I use a normal "FORMAT" in the computer to completely blank the card and then put it back in the camera; I find it's easier to do in the computer than in the camera. The other thing is that I have two cards and cycle them; that way I can keep recordings for several weeks just in case something crops up (car park problem, traffic lights, speeding accusation etc), since my camera records speed, location (GPS) and time of day.
