I understand the concept of it, but how does it work and what is a router for please?

Think of it as a transmitter, like the tv.

The router takes the broadband signal and transmits it over a radius of two hundred or so.

The wifi card in your computer is like an aerial and picks the signal up, connecting to the internet.

If you have a laptop the 'aerial' is more than likely hidden in your screen.

Sorry to be a pain, but does that mean that router does not need to be close to pc ?

The router needs to be close to the modem - it is connected by ethernet cable.


The pc has to be within range - usually within 100 feet or so.
