I understand the concept of it, but how does it work and what is a router for please?

The router takes the broadband signal and transmits it over a radius of two hundred or so.
The wifi card in your computer is like an aerial and picks the signal up, connecting to the internet.
If you have a laptop the 'aerial' is more than likely hidden in your screen.
