For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.With so many European competition games in a season around 8 clubs have a ridiculous fixture list and when all the international breaks are factored in which means players playing even more games, it's not surprising the top teams use the Caribou Cup and FA Cup as a chance to rest top players and give experience to fringe players and youngsters.
I only have passing interest (maybe none now) in football since my childhood; but I would agree that back in the day, doing the double (league title & FA cup) was something clubs aspired to.
But the reason is money, finishing higher up the league might get the club a very lucrative gig in Europe (the following season) – winning the FA cup will only get you the gate receipts getting there (and the Charity Shield match).
