'And, be prepared for absolutely nothing at all to come of this reported discovery.
Take the example of the West Newton Oil and Gas project to the east of Hull. This was licensed in 2008 and described as "potentially one of the largest hydrocarbon fields discovered" onshore in the UK.
Seventeen years has passed and nothing of commercial significance has been extracted from that site in East Yorkshire.'
Fracking is dangerous and should be avoided.

That said I do not know the long-term solution to the problem of supplying our fuel needs for the future.
i agree with ed milliband. the new gas field has according to its discoverers (who may be fudging the number upwards) enough reserves to fuel UK gas consumption for seven years... all other known shale gas reserves in the UK were credibly estimated to have less than ten years worth of gas consumption in them collectively.

so if we extract this and all other known reserves we'll get 15 years worth of gas consumption... in exchange we'll get all the pollution and environmental costs of fracking. i don't know about the newly discovered field but if it's anything like the other shale gas in the UK it is very deep and costly to extract... it will take years of expense and effort to show any return, and then when we finally get it it won't last long enough to justify it and we'll be back where we are now with nothing but a toxic mess to show for it.
ed milliband is doing what UK politicians have failed to do for decades... he is thinking long-term. i think he's made exactly the right decision.
