Mainly vegetable oil, apparently.  (I've never heard of it).

From the Sainsbury's archive, c. 1935:

Interesting. I always thought it was lard.

Cholesterol no longer quite the villain these days, what with 2 sorts, both needed, and the suggestion that it may be correlated but not necessarily causal with clotting.

It was pretending to be lard just like the American version White cap. Lard however, despite all the false claims made by the food industry,  is a far healthier product than the seed oils that are touted a "healthy". Lard has a much higher smoke point and does not when heated produce carcogens in volume that are then consumed by humans.

^carcinogens...

I rememebr it and it was never lard. Lard is still the best for frying mushrooms and cooking yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes among plenty of other uses. Real lardy cake is also just delicious.

^^^ "Lard is still the best for frying mushrooms"

Rubbish!  Only butter is good enough for frying mushrooms!

People eat mushrooms!!??

Lard is best for sausages. Love cold sausage when cooked in lard.

I have to agree with you there, Buen. Butter and lemon juice! Beautiful flavour...

Butter and GARLIC!!

I was reading yesterday, people are returning to butter, rather than oily spreads. Also full fat milk, Jersey one, preferably organic too. No low fat yoghurt as they've got more sugar in. Meat from butchers, rather than process meat. A lot said they're healthier since changing to this once " bad for you" diet.

//the American version White cap//

The American version was Snow Cap. My bad.

Butter only for mushrooms!    ... and eggs!

>>> "Lard is best for sausages".

Nothing at all is best for sausages.  I cook mine in my air fryer (with no oil of any type) and they come out absolutely gorgeous!

(I had my favourite sausages this evening.  Lovely! https://tinyurl.com/5n6r22ku )

Nice. I just cooked Cumberland sausages. Tescos finest. Can't beat them on flavour.
