Just over the Border in south Scotland, this is how I make Mince & Dumplings ....

500g (1lb) minced beef

1 large onion (chopped)

2 carrots (chopped small)

2 tablespoons oil

1 tablespoon Bisto, 1 Oxo cube, Salt, pepper & Worcestershire Sauce if you wish.

In a frying pan (with lid) lightly cook mince in the oil for a few minutes, add other ingredients and enough water to cover, then simmer on hob for 40 mins.

Make the dumplings (I use SR flour, Atora Suet, Salt and water) but can be made with butter in place of suet).  Add to the mince 20 minutes before ending of cooking.  Turn over halfway.  Remember to check if mince requires more liquid during cooking.

Hazlinny. I'm vegetarian and I love dumplings, but not sure how to make them without suet. If you use butter, do you grate it (when cold) or just rub it in?

Atheist  ... 250 g SR Flour, 125 g cold, cubed butter, 3 to 4 tablespoons cold water.  Rub butter and flour until like a breadcrumbs mixture.  Add water and mix with knife. Divide into the balls.

Thanks Hazlinny. How small should the butter cubes be?

Quite small ... makes it easier when 'rubbing in'.

Thanks, Haz... Very helpful.

You are welcome, Atheist.  Hope they turn out well 😋

Pretty much the same as Haz, but I also add peas to the mince. I make my dumplings with butter instead of suet.

Hi Hazlinny, Thanks so much for your quick lovely recipe. You have made me very happy. Cannot wait to make it.! Thanks again.

Hope it turns out well for you, Cleoval - I love that meal. 😋 x

Atheist - you can buy vegeatable suet in most of the major supermarkets. I use it for dumplings and they are delicious.
